Fight the Good Fight
Ever thrown yourself headlong into something, working hard and hoping for the best, only to realize after too long that you were forcing it the whole time? I’ve been there. In fact I’ve been there more than once. What can I say, I’m sure many of you have as well. Maybe some of you are even there now.
There is a natural learning curve that comes to each of us as we try to figure out where our place in the world is. What sort of profession fits me? What type of stresses am I good (or NOT good) at handling? What do I have a natural knack for? Can I find a way to overlap my career interests with my personal interests to make my work more enjoyable? Etc. We are all bound to experience the inevitable ups and downs of finding our way in this life.
I just wanted to offer a word of encouragement for those of you that may feel as I have felt before. If you feel as though you are just spinning your wheels in life, working away at something that perhaps pays the bills but doesn’t fulfill you in any other way, please stop and think! Don’t force it. If you don’t want to feel like you’ve settled in life, you’ll need to have both courage and patience. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you feel that you have found what may suit you best – whether it be a relationship, a career, a hobby, etc. my word of encouragement is simple. DON’T GIVE UP
There is a principle that I have really taken to heart lately that I wished I would’ve heard many years ago. Double down on what’s working – don’t just dabble here and there, hoping for the best. Focus your time and efforts on something that you not only believe in, but that you know will work from a logical and practical perspective. Take it from someone who has for the majority of her life been a “jack of all trades, master of none”. I have experienced more success and fulfillment since applying this principle in my life, and I know that you can too.
You know what’s easy to do in life? Quit. Make excuses. Say things like “I can’t” or “I don’t know how”. I challenge you to be different. The simple truth is that we live in a day and age where you can, and anything you don’t know, you can figure out. You’ll have to put up a heck of a fight to get what you want out of life. But we are also all so incredibly blessed to be living NOW. Can you imagine the hardships involved in making a living off of a personal brand like Sylver & Zeus even 25 years ago? We live in an amazing age of technology where all of the world’s knowledge fits conveniently in our pocket in the form of a smartphone. Go take advantage of all of the resources at hand – invest in yourself, your education, and allow yourself to take flight!
I’ll close my meager ramblings with one of Sean’s favorite quotes from a man named Arnold Bennett. “The real Tragedy is the tragedy of the man who never in his life braces himself for his one supreme effort – he never stretches to his full capacity, never stands up to his full stature.”
Brace yourself, because it won’t be easy! You will be stretched if you want to reach your full potential. Stand up and for Heaven’s sake (and your own sake), learn to fight the good fight! I’ll be fighting right there alongside you.
